Xàbia guide

Six local things worth planning your week around.

Xàbia · Jávea

A town that still keeps its own time.

Tucked between the Montgó and the Mediterranean, Xàbia is quieter and more local than its Costa Blanca neighbours — a place of fishing boats, tiled cupolas, orange trees in the plaza, and a festive calendar that rolls right through the summer.

Fogueres de Sant Joan & Moros i Cristians

Fiestas

Fogueres de Sant Joan & Moros i Cristians

Come in June for the bonfires of Sant Joan — the whole town on the beach, midnight jumps over the fire for luck. In July, the Moros i Cristians parades take over the old town: velvet capes, marching bands and gunpowder at dusk. Xàbia lives its calendar out loud.

Arroces, tapas, and a very long lunch

Food

Arroces, tapas, and a very long lunch

This is rice country. Paella valenciana on Sundays, arròs a banda by the port, black rice with squid ink, esgarraet as a starter, cremaeta to finish. Wash it down with a cold Marina Alta moscatel and don't plan anything for the afternoon.

Three towns, one Mediterranean rhythm

Culture & ambience

Three towns, one Mediterranean rhythm

Xàbia is really three places — the honey-stone old town around Sant Bartomeu, the working port with its fishing boats and evening paseo, and the long sandy Arenal for beach days. Bilingual in Valencià and Spanish, unhurried, still gently local. Mornings at the market, sea by noon, dinner after 9.
